CIVITAS BOARD GAME

Civitas Board Game, UAL 2020 , Photos by Barbora Mrazkova.

Civitas is the result of my thesis research, as part of my MA in Graphic Design and Communication at UAL. The prompt was on “How can ecovillages expand for a more sustainable future?” I wanted mainly to find other ways of living that were more connected and grounded to the environment around us, having as priority the maintenance of the wildlife and the harmony as a community. I explored and lived in ecovillages (sustainably driven communities) in the south of Portugal to enrich my research. I used design and art, as tools to question behaviors, through learning about other possible ways of living as a society. This game was a bridge to a more sustainable and grounded life, creating awareness and change in a fun and engaging way.

Civitas is a board game designed for players to build their own ecovillage/eco community, as a team. During the game they face multiple challenges, similar to the ones you would face in an ecovillage. In this game, you do not need previous knowledge about the topic, you learn it during the game. This original concept was created to familiarize players with the way of living in a sustainable driven community and raise awareness around this topic. The materials used are fully recyclable and compostable.
